Who can be a Drowning Islands advocate?
Anyone who believes that climate change disproportionately affects those who are already most vulnerable (i.e. inhabitants of the world's Drowning Islands) and would like to dedicate their skills to solutions may apply for an advocacy role. Advocates are expected to be or become fluent in the details of climate change such that they may advocate with clarity about the plight of the inhabitants of low-lying, rising sea affected areas.
Why serve as an advocate?
Drowning Islands is a highly transparent non-profit that commits 100% of it's resources directly to island nations impacted by climate change. By volunteering as an advocate, you will have an opportunity to directly contribute to the helping of low-lying island nations.
Our advocates will have an opportunity to apply their unique skills to world-changing climate projects. Each advocate will have their biography published on the Drowning Islands website and be given outlets for publishing their research and writing, as well. Advocates receive a kit containing images, brochures, and other materials to assist in their advocacy. Each advocate will have their voices amplified through Drowning Islands. Their efforts will have impact.
Advocacy Tools
Each advocate is given an @drowningislands.com email address to use in their related correspondence, as well as business cards with their name and contact information. We hope to equip each advocate with the tools they need to complete their chosen projects and are open to providing other resources on a case-by-case basis.
What kind of tasks are advocates asked to complete?
We want each advocate to bring their unique skills and diverse interests to the table. We need writers, artists, environmentalists, engineers, and builders of all types. We seek creative proposals to address the massive civic and environmental challenges faced by inhabitants of Drowning Islands. Our advocates give talks, write articles, and generate content in support of our mission. Our application process provides an opportunity for you to tell us how you can contribute.
Advocacy Deliverables:
Our advocates complete tasks adapted to their skill set but following a general timeline:
Monthly – Each advocate must contribute one small, relevant social media post per month. This can be as simple as a single tweet or more involved, such as a Facebook post or Instagram image.
Quarterly – Each quarter, the Drowning Islands advocates will have a conference call or Skype to discuss current events, upcoming projects, and general strategy for the volunteer advocates. Advocates are strongly encouraged to participate in these calls.
Yearly – Each advocate must write a short, illustrative article about a topic related to the Drowning Islands. These yearly contributions, although they can be more frequent, will be edited by Brook and published on the Drowning Islands Huffington post blog space. In addition, each advocate is asked to complete a small project in support of the Drowning Islands mission. Examples of this requirement include giving a talk at a school or conference, writing a profile piece on a climate activist, petitions to local governments re. climate-related actions, building sustainable technologies (planting trees, composting toilets, water purification), or fundraising for and executing an awareness-raising event. Aside from this list, we encourage advocates to propose projects suited to their unique skills and experiences.
Stipend & Project Support
Each Drowning Islands advocate may also be eligible for a small stipend and/or project support. Assignment of support is at the discretion of the Drowning Islands board.
Do advocates have to adhere to certain political beliefs?
The only political requirement is a commitment to the Drowning Islands and their inhabitants.

Prospective advocates are required to submit a short essay detailing their desire to contribute and potential projects within the scope of their individual abilities.
